when you consider it among other cars in its class, it holds up. compare it to a hyundai accent, or toyota yaris, or honda's smallest civic even.... none of these cars are even designed to drive down the highway at today's highway speeds. i had a hyundai accent for five years, and though i enjoyed driving it as if i was a stunt driver from the movie fast and the furious.... it felt like it was going to fall apart whenever i got above fifty. the wheel started shaking, road noise was horrible, you could feel every bump in the road, etc. the yaris wasn't any better this spring when my girlfriend test drove it. my analysis in this article was simply a comparison against similar cars and how the smart held up comparing it across the board. and despite the fact that the smart may feel like it is nothing more than a 70mph tin can on the highway, the fuel mileage is still better than the other comparable cars and even most of the united states hybrids.
